The Bologna Process laid the foundation for competence-based education across Higher Music Education (HME) institutions in Europe, establishing agreed-upon learning outcomes. However, pre-college music education still lacks a standardized framework. In 2007, the Polifonia pre-college working group proposed a set of competences aligned with HME outcomes, offering a theoretical model that has yet to be fully developed.
Building on this foundation, an Erasmus+ project initiated by Young Music Talents in Europe (YMTE), in collaboration with the Association Europeenne des Conservatoires (AEC) and 4 esteemed pre-college institutions in Europe, aims to address this gap. The project seeks to establish a European reference framework and ensure quality assurance for specialized pre-college music education. Its goal is to foster curricular alignment between pre-college and higher music education, identifying and defining key competences, learning outcomes, and quality measures that strengthen the educational continuum.
To help us reaching the goals, we ask you to contribute by filling out a questionnaire.
This questionnaire is part of a European-wide study examining how competence-based learning outcomes are integrated into Pre-CME and how they align with the entry requirements of Higher Music Education Institutions (HMEIs). Your insights will contribute to a comprehensive report that will inform curriculum development and policymaking at local, national, and European levels.
Through this mapping activity, we aim to:
• Identify challenges in curricular design and the transition between pre-college and higher education.
• Build a comprehensive database of pre-college music institutions, including lesser-known entities, to broaden the European music education landscape.
• Strengthen connections between institutions, promote qualitative exchanges, and support student progression.
Expected Outcomes:
• A factual overview of the alignment between competence-based learning outcomes in Pre-CME and HMEI admission requirements.
• Publicly accessible information on the YMTE website to support educators, students, and stakeholders, fostering collaboration and awareness across the music education community.
