YMTE

The YMTE Annual Conference 2024, Varaždin , Croatia

The YMTE Annual Conference will begin on Sept 23rd at 15.00 and will conclude with a Festival-concert performed by students from YMTE-members schools on Sept 25th at 20.00 and a Festive Dinner at Park Boutique Hotel.

The conference will be held at the Varaždin School of Music, and the program will include relevant topics for discussions, visits to places in and around Varaždin and concerts.

The Conference coincides with the festival Varaždin Baroque Evenings and we have been fortunate to join in a collaboration with Varaždin Music School and the Varaždin Baroque Evenings on a student project, where students from YMTE-member schools will form an orchestra that will perform at the festival. The students will arrive for their first rehearsals on Sept 22nd and the concert on Sept 25th will conclude the YMTE Annual Conference, making this student project a perfect musical frame for the conference!

The conference fee is 150 EUR pr YMTE member participant (Non-members 175 EUR).
The fee includes the full conference program, all meals, and concerts at the festival.

Each participant is responsible for their own travel and accommodation.

Topics for discussions

Cooperation with partner organisations: YMTE and AEC, YMTE and EMU

Student/teacher collaborations among YMTE members – “Make things happen!”
– Offers for exchange, invitations to projects/collaborations
– Ways to develop further cooperations

Funding/Applications – Erasmus+ and other grant schemes

The process to enrolment (who, why, when and how?)
The future of our musical landscape starts with the pupils. Where do you find them, or do they come to you? At what age do you start, and who is the person you connect with (parent, teacher, child)? What do you look for in a pupil when you first meet them? What can we learn from each other’s process?

Curriculum/Syllabus for pre-college
Learning outcomes:

  • Main subject/instrument
  • Ensemble music-making (chamber music, ensembles, orchestra)
  • General music subjects (structural awareness of music)
  • Academic subjects

Assessments
We all assess our pupils for various reasons. What is the purpose of the assessment and how does it benefit the pupil? Does the assessment form we use support this purpose, and our desired learning outcomes? What other factors can influence this process?

Showcase/Sharing and inspiring: Ongoing projects – Learning LAB
Updates from the Haag-project.

Supporting and advising pupils beyond their lessons
Creating an environment suited for growth; what advice do we offer?

Hopes for the future
The life of a musician will look very different in 20 years than it did 20 years ago. What is changing or should be changed in our education in order to prepare our pupils?

The discussions will be both in plenary sessions and in smaller parallel sessions.

In the Registration form you are welcome to place the topics in your personal order of relevance, and you are also welcome to add other topics you would like the conference to address.
The topics will be indicative for the forming of Work Groups where YMTE-members can join and further pursue the topics, develop cooperations and exchange-plans, and contribute to development that will benefit all YMTE members – and the pre-college phase of music education.

The Annual Conference 2023 was held on the 10th and 11th of November at the School for Young Talents in The Royal Conservatoire The Hague.

16 member organisations were represented by 26 delegates, and the program presented many opportunities for learning, sharing and networking – as well as fulfilling our formal obligations through the General Meeting.

Workshops sessions with topics like Process to enrolment, Assessments, advising pupils, EU-funding and our collaboration with the AEC gave room to interesting discussions and sharing of ideas and practices.
The conference had been planned to be parallel with the AEC´s annual congress and that gave us the opportunity to indulge in a joint session with AEC. The cooperation with AEC is important in two ways: it gives YMTE extra “strength” to pursue some of our prioritised topics; and it gives us credibility as the voice of pre-college music education.

Open discussions about exchange projects, the forming of Work Groups for various areas, and plenty of time for social interactions among the delegates made the days in The Hague into a memorable and fruitful occasion. We are all looking forward to coming meetings and projects, and to the next Annual Conference in September 2024 – which will be in Varaždin, Croatia.

In the following document you can find all the details about the General Meeting of the YMTE.
